Revised Decades Drive-In Op-Ed

It’s the 1950s. Television programs are beginning to multiply, and rock music is just beginning to reach stereos. Car production is booming, and highways are expanding in every direction, taking Americans farther than ever before. Hollywood productions are increasing in budget and future classics such as Singing in the Rain and Rebel Without a Cause are being released. Now more than ever, Americans are enjoying these films on the big screen, most notably at the iconic drive-in theaters that spanned the nation.

While drive-ins were once a nightly entertainment staple, over the years their numbers have significantly diminished. Today, people are staying in for movies, and more and more of the American lifestyle is centered around staying indoors. What Americans need is a good reason to engage in activities outside. While many people want to spend more of their busy lives outdoors, doing so may sacrifice some of their precious leisure time. This is why drive-in theaters are in need of a large scale revival: they are where leisure and the outdoors meet.

A revival of drive-in movies could not be better timed, as retro nostalgia is at record high. People are becoming nostalgic for time periods they never even lived through, such as the 1950s drive-in boom. Contemporary America should use this to its advantage. Nearly all Americans have heard of the drive-in theater, yet few have actually experienced it. Now is the perfect time to revitalize the outdoor movie experience.

Drive-in theaters have the potential to bring all people, both young and old, together for nightly entertainment. A drive-in theater can double as a movie theater and event location for events like car shows that further highlight 1950s nostalgia. Towns all across America could benefit from the introduction of drive-in theaters, and Seguin is no exception. With the help of nonprofits such as Decades Drive-In, all of America can reap the benefits of the outdoor movie experience.
